How often do we think about upgrading our roof? This is probably not on your key list of upgrades to do to your home right now. While many think of spring upgrades for their home they might think of landscaping, maybe redoing a kitchen or bathroom, but you should think of your roof. Your roof provides the most of the protection from the elements. It protects your home from rain, snow and even falling and blown tree branches & debris. If your roof fails, it could lead to unsightly water damage, structural damage or mold and rot. We don’t say this to frighten you in repairs, rather we want to make sure you and your family are being protected by a proper roof. Upgrading your roof can also make a large impact to the style of your home.
Let’s take a look at 3 reasons to upgrade your roof this spring.
1. Get Rid of the old 3 Tab
The old 20-year or 25-year 3-tab shingles are outdated in both style and protection. These shingles offer the bare minimum protection unlike a 30-year laminated shingle. 3-tab shingles are one piece, just a single flat asphalt shingle. This allows greater potential for wind and hail damage to cause the roofing system to fail. However, 30-year laminated shingles are thicker and also have additional layer laminated on the top of the base layer. This is why laminated shingles offer much better protection from hail and wind.
2. Class IV
Shingles are rated Class 1 through 4, with Class 4 shingles having the highest impact resistance. Typically, you cannot tell the impact rating by looking at a shingle. Class IV can be in many different beautiful styles and materials like asphalt shingles, tile, and metal. Additionally, the resistance they provide to high impacts from hail and strong winds means the roof is going to last longer and offer a much greater level of protection. Also, insurance companies offer large discounts for installing a Class IV roofing system on your home.
3. Designer Shingles
The last reason you should upgrade your roof this spring is because there are just too many great looking options available. Why not give your home a face lift with a nice designer looking shingle Lastly, many designer shingles are also designated as Class IV which means you can save money and look great!
